| FENLAND PICNIC SITES, CAR PARKS AND PLACES TO VISIT |
| FREE PARKING PLACES ROUND THE EDGES OF THE WASH 1. Just south of Skegness is an area called 'Gibralter Point' in the North West corner of the Wash, a vast area of sand dunes, a visitors centre, toilet and a car park. 2 Travelling south along the south west coast of the wash are a number of other parking places that overlook the Wash and salt flats. 3 Just north of Boston near to the River Witham, is an area where there is a free car park, and after a short walk the Pilgrim Memorial can be viewed. 4. In the area between the River Witham and the River Welland there is a car park down a road a Frampton Marsh. The estuaries of both rivers can be viewed as they enter the Wash after walking a distance. 5. Then turning the corner, east of Fosdyke, there is another car park on the East Bank of the River Welland at Moulton Marsh, which again has walking access to the Wash. 6. Midway between the River Welland and the River Nene, there is another car parking place at Holbeach Marsh. After climbing the sea bank, a panoramic view can be seen of the southern end of the Wash, which includes on a clear day Boston Stump to the west and Sandringham and Hunstanton to the right. 7. On the East bank where the River Nene enters the Wash, there is a lighthouse that was once occupied by Peter Scott. Nearby, is a picnic place and parking place, where walks can be commenced along the bank of the River Nene, and if you are feeling adventurous you can even walk to West Lynn. There are views where the southern end of the Wash can be seen, and on a clear a clear day the cliffs at Hunstanton can also be viewed. 8. There are many minor parking places along the coast travelling east, to a point where the River Ouse enters the Wash in the south east corner between Kings Lynn and West Lynn, and there are many parking places in the town of King's Lynn. 9. Travelling north from Kings Lynn there are various other parking places, with the Sandringham woodland inland, and salt marshes and sand dunes out in the Wash. This coast takes in places like Heacham, and eventually finishes up in Hunstanton on the North east corner of the Wash |
| PARKING AND PICNIC PLACES NEXT TO THE RIVER OUSE 1. Many of the Towns along the route of the River Great Ouse as it trek towards the Wash have car parks in their centres which overlook the river, these include Bedford, St. Neots, Huntingdon, Godmanchaster, Ives and Ely. 2. Not included in the above is a car park at Offord Cluny between Huntingdon and St. Neots, which can be free at various times, and is a well known mecca for fishermen. 3. There is also a free car park just north of Denver Sluice on the Great Ouse at the end of the Bedford Level Rivers, this enables people to walk and admire the intricate workings of the sluice and the river systems as they merge into one big channel that heads towards Kings Lynn. While near this location, it maybe worthwhile to have a trip to the nearby Denver Windmill near Denver Village. |
| FENLAND CAMP SITES There are many campsites in the Fens. The most central to the whole area is one at the east of Sutton St. James village, which is ideal for touring in the area, and is on the banks of a large drain if a day's fishing is required. |
| PARKING AND PICNIC PLACES NEXT TO THE RIVER NENE There are a number of parking places along the River Nene as it flows through the Fens from the east of Great North Road. 1. Wansford is the first port of call. There is a parking place just to the east of the A1, which doubles as a large lay-by for heavy traffic using the A1. There is grass margin between the car park and the river when walking can be undertaken. 2. Peterborough has several parking places alongside the RIver where cars can be parked and recreation taken, these include Ferry Meadows, Orton Staunch (which has lock gates), Oundle Road, and to the east of the city, there is another large car park and recreation area. 3. Between Peterbrough and Wisbech Docks, there are no official parking places beside the river, but there are an abundance of laybys and 'on road' parking places. 4. From Wisbech to Sutton Bridge docks there are a number of small parking places, grass pull offs, and 'on the road parking' at the side of the River Nene. 5. The car park on the East Bank of the River Nene near it's mouth is the only official car park and picnic spot on this length of the river. The lighthouse was the original home of Peter Scott, the naturalist and painter. |
